Quarto Escuro de Goethe is an interdisciplinary project by artist Eunice Gonçalves Duarte that explores the relationship between art, science, and thought. Inspired by Goethe’s experiments in Theory of Colours and his dialogue with Newton’s Opticks, the project aims at researching how the visible and the invisible emerge in visual perception through performance-installation practice.
In close collaboration between artists, scientists and thinkers, the project explores a variety of light phenomena such as reflection, refraction, the visible and invisible spectrum, and Goethe’s morphological approach to science.
The project unfolds as a performance-installation, an installation device, 6 podcast episodes, and workshops, inviting audiences to rethink light, shadow, and the act of perceiving.
